born: England
Profession:Entomologist (at The Natural
History Museum, London)
From early childhood, Linda Pitkin has had a passion for nature, which
has drawn her both to a career in biological research and to underwater
photography. She approaches her marine life photography with a biologist's
fascination for living organisms, but even more with a photographer's
eye for composition and lighting.
Linda started scuba diving in 1979 and took up underwater photography a year
later, joining the British Society
of Underwater Photographers (BSoUP). Diving usually with Brian, her husband,
she has travelled around the world in search of a wide range of underwater subjects,
from immense whale sharks to tiny shrimps, and scenic views of reefs and wrecks.
Linda is the author and photographer of four books The Living Sea - a Photographic
Exploration of Life in the Sea (1995), Under Northern Seas (1997), Coral Fish
(2001), and a book for children, Journey Under the Sea (2003). Her photographs
feature widely in many media including books, magazines and exhibitions. She
has won many international photography awards and in 2003 she became an honoree
in the Women Divers Hall of Fame.
